One of the most infamous bus accidents in Texas history the Alton school bus incident of 1989 September 1989 witnessed a tragic Collision along Brian Road involving a Dr Pepper delivery vehicle and a school bus belonging to the mission. Consolidated Independent School District the Collision occurred just after the bus had picked up its final student with the delivery vehicle failing to heat a stop sign trapped in a calichi pit submerged in roughly 10 ft of water the bus faced a dire situation with gaps in the side windows the front boarding door and a detached windshield water flooded the bus within 30 to 60 seconds while an air pocket could have provided crucial moments for escape unfortunately the students were not afforded this opportunity.
